Smack My Bitch Up – Prodigy
We’d like to show you a groundbreaking video from a few years back that has a twist in the tale from Prodigy – ‘Smack My Bitch Up’.
Sure, at first sight, it would appear to be a misogynistic night out on the town, with plenty of customers, performers and doormen getting battered by the guy in the ‘first-person view’, but if you’ve NOT seen this video before, keep on watching until the end when the ‘twist’ will be revealed.
From Linkedin Slideshare:
From analysing the ‘Smack My Bitch Up’ video I have learnt that there are direct links between the narrative and the visuals on the screen.
These links are explicitly shown to the audience through the use of vibrant colours, fast takes, and a fast tempo of music throughout- the video is overall very crazy and ‘in your face’ which may be because the person whose point of view we see has taken drugs and is probably drunk.
Furthermore, I have also found that it is very effective to have a sense of enigma throughout the video followed by a shocking twist right at the end of the video which makes a point and gets the message out to the audience strongly.
Immediately banned by YouTube on its release, but now making a showing from commercial users, we’ve gone for the showing on Vimeo that shows even the deleted scenes in all their glory.
So sit back and get prepared to see drug abuse, violence, abuse towards men and women in equal amounts, and alcohol abuse in this Vimeo version of the video from Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up.
